The twenties of the twentieth century began very positively for the sugar industry and beet growing; both of them benefited from smooth sales and achieved high profitability until the mid-twenties. However, since the second half of the twenties, symptoms of global sugar crisis of overproduction began to appear. Since 1928 the situation on the world market became worse due to the increased protectionism. The Czechoslovak sugar industry was unable to cope with the changing conditions and lost its position on the international market soon, however, thanks to the cartel organization they managed to shift most of the costs of the crisis onto the beet growers, who were ultimately affected very strongly. Moreover, the sugar crisis was not a problem only of sugar industry and beet growers, but it also spread to the rest of the national economy of Czechoslovakia trough the channels outlined above. Thus, it partly contributed to the emergence and deepening of the Great Depression, which struck Czechoslovakia in the early thirties. … celý popis
